The modern printing paper making machine is a continuous and integrated system, the dilute slurry of refined pulp fibers (approx. 99% water, 1% fiber) is evenly distributed onto a moving endless wire mesh—the forming fabric—via the headbox. The weak, wet web then enters a series of high-pressure press nips. Here, felt blankets support the paper as it passes between massive rolls, mechanically squeezing out water to increase dryness from around 20% to over 50%. Heat recovery systems, such as hood air heat exchangers, are integral here, capturing and reusing thermal energy to boost paper mill-wide efficiency.
