Once wet pulp has been shaped into an unsized paper sheet in the forming section of the paper making machine, the wet web still retains a large amount of excess water. Press rolls exert uniform mechanical pressure on the wet paper sheet to push out this extra moisture through the process of mechanical dewatering. As the paper web moves through the press section, it gradually becomes denser and more compact. The uniform pressure applied by the rolls strengthens bonding between paper fibers, which directly improves the structural strength and overall integrity of the finished paper.
