What is a High Density Cleaner

What is a High Density Cleaner

The High Density Cleaner is a centrifugal or hydrocyclone-based separator that targets dense contaminants (e.g., heavy plastics, metals, stone, sand, dense fiber fragments) that do not suspend readily in the pulp. The High Density Cleaner uses rotational forces and differential densities to separate heavier solids from the lighter fiber pulp, directing the clean furnish onward while discharging the concentrated contaminants to waste or recovery streams. High Density Cleaners are commonly placed upstream of the refiners or on specific recycle streams where high solids loading or heavy impurities are problematic.

How an High Density Cleaner Works

1. Inlet and feed: Stock slurry enters the cleaner through an inlet designed to promote a stable swirling flow, which sets up a centrifugal field.
2. Separation mechanism: Denser particles experience greater centrifugal force and migrate toward the outer wall, where they are collected and discharged through a dedicated heavy-impurity outlet.
3. Cleaned stock outlet: Lighter fibers and lighter fraction continue to the next stage (refiner, beater, or headbox) with reduced contamination.
4. Recirculation options: Some designs incorporate a recycle loop to maximize impurity removal efficiency, especially at varying solids loadings.

The High Density Cleaner is a strategic asset in modern paper mills, especially where heavy impurities threaten efficiency, product quality, and equipment lifespan. By effectively removing dense contaminants early in the furnish stream, mills can achieve cleaner pulp, smoother refining and forming processes, and reduced maintenance burden.
